Mercenary Breastplate and Tassets Authentic Medieval Armor

Medieval armor chest plate evolved from basic chainmail which was a mesh of interlinked metal rings to more complex forms like plate armor and later a combination of both. Chainmail was the dominant protection for most of the medieval period providing flexibility and protection against old weapons. Over time armor became more specialized with plate armor being developed to withstand more powerful weapons eventually leading to full plate armor suits though these were not common until later in the medieval period.

The earliest form of widespread authentic armour consisting of thousands of small interwoven metal rings. It was versatile offering good protection and freedom of movement. Larger rigid plates of steel or iron riveted together offering greater protection against more powerful weaponry. Initially plate armor was used to reinforce vulnerable areas like the knees elbows and shins. Eventually full suits of articulated plate armor were developed.

During the period when plate armor was being developed knights experimented with various combinations of chainmail and plates including coats of plates where metal plates were riveted onto a tunic. Boiled leather or hardened leather was used for protection particularly in areas where metal armor was impractical or too expensive. It was carefully shaped to fit the body and provide a balance between protection and flexibility. Early helmets included flat-topped helmets with side plates and great helms that fully covered the head. Later bascinets and other more streamlined helmets with visors became common.

The development of authentic medieval chest armor was closely linked to the development of weapons. More effective weapons like longbows and crossbows prompted the development of more robust armor. Armor often reflected social status and power. Wearing certain types of armor was a privilege of the nobility and could symbolize wealth and status. Improvements in metalworking and manufacturing techniques allowed for the production of more sophisticated and durable armor. Plate armor began to emerge initially in localized areas of protection. Plate armor became more widespread and full suits of armor were developed. Full plate armor reached its peak of development with elaborately decorated and refined suits being created.
