Description
Ozerne Rus Helmet 13th-14th Century:
A faithful reconstruction of a 13th–14th century Rus’ fighting helmet, named after finds attributed to the Ozerne/Ozernoye region. This type represents the practical military style used across the Rus’ principalities during the Mongol period: a conical skull for efficient deflection, a projecting nasal for facial protection, and a mail aventail (barmitsa) suspended from vervelles to guard the cheeks, neck, and throat. The shape and construction reflect the blend of steppe, Byzantine and Western influences visible in period iconography and archaeological examples from Eastern Europe.
Armor Arena forges this helmet for serious use in reenactment, LARP, stage and screen. You can select mild steel in 14, 16, 18 or 20 gauge, or 18 gauge stainless steel for lower maintenance. We offer either a Dull Finish for an authentic field look or a Mirror Finish for a polished display. Every helmet is supplied with inside foam padding and a leather chin strap with a steel buckle for secure fastening. Optional features such as a mail barmitsa (aventail) and nasal variants are available on request so you can tailor the piece to your activity and era.
Built by Armor Arena with high‑quality craftsmanship and the lowest price guaranteed, this helmet balances historical form with modern practicality, making it a reliable choice for reenactment groups, medieval markets, SCA (with rules‑compliant modifications), LARP, cosplay, film companies and theatres.

FAQs
- Is “Ozerne/Ozernoye” the right name?
- Yes. “Ozerne” and “Ozernoye” are accepted transliterations; pick one and keep it consistent. Use “Rus’” with an apostrophe for historical accuracy.
- How accurate is the design?
- The form reflects Eastern European finds and period art from the 13th–14th centuries: a conical skull, nasal, and mail barmitsa. Details like nasal shape and finish can vary by region and date.
- Which gauge should I choose?
- LARP/cosplay: 18–20 ga mild or 18 ga stainless (lighter, easier to wear).
- Reenactment/display: 16–18 ga mild or 18 ga stainless.
- Heavy combat/SCA: typically 14–16 ga with rule‑compliant face protection (often a bar grill). Always check your group’s rules.
- Is stainless historically accurate?
- Stainless is a modern convenience. For strict authenticity, choose mild steel; for low maintenance, choose stainless.
- Does it come with a mail barmitsa?
- It’s available as an option. We can add vervelles so you can attach your own aventail.
- What finishes are available?
- Dull Finish for a period look; Mirror Finish for a polished appearance.
- What’s inside the helmet?
- Padded foam liner plus a leather chin strap with a steel buckle.
- Can you do custom sizing?
- Yes. Send your head circumference and any special fit notes.
