Medieval Woolen Gauntlets Ver.2 – Authentic, Warm & Durable

Medieval woolen gauntlets were a type of glove or hand protection made of wool that were used by soldiers for defense. They were also worn for decoration and status. In the 11th century, knights wore chain mail shirts with wide sleeves that reached to the elbow. In the 12th century, chain mail shirts with narrower sleeves began to be worn, and some had chain mail mittens or “muffs”. In the early 14th century, armorers began to design fully articulated plate armor, including gauntlets made of overlapping plates of steel. The need for gauntlets declined as firearms made hand-to-hand combat less common.

Woolen Gauntlets were a strategic part of a soldier’s defense. Woolen medieval gauntlets were worn by women as a fashion ornament and were also worn by workers, falconers, fighters, preachers, and lovers. Gloves were made for men, women, and children and were made from wool, textiles, metals, and leather. There were social rules for when to wear gloves and when to take them off. Gloves were suitable gifts and often appear as fashionable items in portraits.
