Woolen mittens were a common type of headwear in the Middle Ages especially in colder regions. Woolen medieval mittens were worn by people of all social classes. Some of the earliest mittens date to around 1000 AD in Latvia. A mitten made of wool was found in the harbor area of the early medieval trading town of Dorestad in the Netherlands, dating from the 8th or early 9th century. In the 16th century, knitting became more popular in England and mittens were produced at home from wool. A sixteenth-century child’s mitten is now in the collection of the Museum of London.

The primary function of mittens was to protect against cold, heat, and wear. They were also worn by knights and nobles as a form of protection and comfort. Woolen Mittens made by nålbinding technique were popular in early Middle Ages. This technique is also called knotless netting. Fragments of knitted mittens have been found in Estonia.
