Description

Norman Spangenhelm Without Nasal

(These designs are based on early Spangenhelm helmets that soldiers, archers and light cavalry used in Europe from the 9th to the 11th centuries. This kind of helmet was great for archers and light infantry because it protected them while still letting them see and move around easily)

The Archer’s Spangenhelm comes from the early Middle Ages, when segmented helmets were light and offered good protection, which was important for both mounted soldiers and bowmen. This style was common in Europe from the 9th to the 11th century and came from the classic late Roman and Byzantine spangenhelm styles. Its open face and segmented crown design gave archers, scouts and mobile troops on the early mediaeval battlefield a better view, more airflow and of course more structural strength.

Armor Arena carefully and accurately remade this historical design, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern comfort. We make each helmet by hand from mild steel. You can get them in 14 g, 16 g, 18 g or 20 g gauges or in 18 g stainless steel for better resistance to rust. Customers can pick between a Dull Finish which looks like it has been used in battle, and a Mirror Finish which makes the item look polished and ready to be displayed.

Each helmet has inside foam padding and a leather chin strap with a steel buckle to keep it safe and comfortable. This makes it good for SCA practice, LARP combat, mediaeval markets, reenactment shows, film sets, museum displays and theatre productions.

Armor Arena always makes high-quality handmade armour with a professional finish and guarantees the lowest prices.

Questions & Answers

Q: What is the historical era of this helmet?
A: The Archer’s Spangenhelm represents early medieval Europe, roughly between the 9th and 11th centuries with influences from Viking, Norman and Byzantine armor styles.

Q: Which material and gauge should I choose?
A: Choose 14 g or 16 g mild steel for heavy reenactment and 18 g or 20 g for light display or costume. The 18 g stainless steel option offers premium corrosion resistance and lower maintenance.

Q: Which surface finish looks more authentic?

Q: Is this helmet comfortable for long use?
A: Yes, it’s fully lined with foam padding and fitted with a leather chin strap and steel buckle for comfort and stability during movement.

Q: Can it be used for SCA or LARP combat?
A: Many Armor Arena customers use our helmets for re‑enactment events and controlled sparring, but you must always follow your organization’s or country’s official safety rules.
