Description
Great Helmet 13th/14th Century:
Also called 13th-14th Century Crusader Pot Helmet
The Great Helm is still one of the most well-known helmets from medieval European history. This big helmet first appeared in the late 12th century and became very popular among Crusader knights and mounted warriors in Christendom during the 13th and early 14th centuries.
The Great Helm, which was also called the Pot Helm, Barrel Helm, Bucket Helm and the French word Heaume, covered the whole head and face, unlike earlier open-faced designs. The cylindrical shape with narrow eye slits and small breathing holes made it very hard for swords, maces and lances to get through. During the Crusades and later medieval wars, knights in England, France, Germany and the Holy Roman Empire all wore this helmet.
Over time, the design changed from flat-topped versions that were popular in the 13th century to sugar-loaf pointed designs that were popular in the early 14th century. This pointed shape was better at deflecting blows from above than the original flat-topped shape. By the middle to late 1400s, the Great Helm was no longer used on the battlefield because more practical visored helmets became popular.
Armor Arena offers this real Great Helm replica, which was made with a focus on historical accuracy and practical use. The helmet has the typical enclosed shape with eye holes in the right places for seeing ahead and breathing holes for breathing. Foam padding inside makes it comfortable to wear for a long time. A strong leather chin strap with a steel buckle keeps the helmet in place while you move around and fight.
You can get this medieval Great Helm in different steel gauges, each of which is good for a different purpose. Choose 14 gauge for the best protection during heavy combat activities that meet SCA standards. Choose 16 gauge for great protection and less weight. For general reenactment, LARP events and theater use, choose 18 gauge. Choose 20 gauge for lighter ceremonial and display uses. The mild steel construction gives it a classic look and the 18-gauge stainless steel makes it rust-resistant, so it doesn’t need as much upkeep.
You can choose between two surface finishes to get the look you want. The dull finish makes the armour look like it has been through real battles, just like the original medieval armour. The mirror finish, on the other hand, makes it look polished and ready for display and formal events.
Armor Arena is still dedicated to offering the best medieval armour at the lowest price possible. Before shipping, every Great Helm is checked to make sure that customers get historically accurate protection that meets modern standards for durability and craftsmanship. This Great Helm gives you a classic medieval look and is built to last, so you can wear it to SCA heavy combat, LARP battles, historical re-enactments, Crusader impressions, theatre productions, movies, medieval markets or cosplay events.
