Medieval leather gauntlets were a type of armed leather glove which protected the hands and wrists of knights and soldiers in the medieval era. Medieval gauntlets evolved from simple leather gloves into sophisticated pieces of armor that combined leather. Early gauntlets were simple leather gloves worn for basic hand protection. In the 13th century, buckskin gauntlets were popular in France and Italy. In the 14th century, chainmail gauntlets were worn by medieval soldiers and knights. In the 15th century, the cuff of the gauntlet narrowed to protect against sword thrusts. The wrist and finger protection changed from one piece to multiple interlocking plates. This change allowed for greater wrist and finger motion. Leather gauntlets also appeared in the American West as military uniform accessories.
