Authentic Medieval Gaiters – Protective Leg Armor:
This multipurpose item is also known as gaiters, shoe covers and half chaps. It adds a genuine finishing touch to any costume, LARP activity or other situation calling for a bit of mediaeval allure. Medieval gaiters were originally worn by the clergy and military to protect their lower legs and footwear. They were also used as an accessory to protect clothing or as an ornament. They were also used for horseback riding. Medieval boot gaiters were made of leather usually brown, black and natural color. They were buttoned up the side and extended from the upper part of the shoe or boot to just above the knee.
Bishops and archdeacons of the Church of England wore medieval leg gaiters until the mid-twentieth century. European armies used medieval boot covers to protect the lower legs of their soldiers. Leather gaiters have been used over the boots in several military uniforms. Gaiters are still used for horseback riding. Gaiters were also called "spatterdashes". The area of the leg where bishops used to wear gaiters is classically called the gaiter area.
