Splint greaves were a type of limb armor that were used in Europe and Sweden before the Viking Age. They were made of metal splints attached to a fabric backing. The earliest splint armor was found in a Scythian grave from the 4th century BC. In Sweden, examples of splint armor were found in the Vendel and Valsgärde burial mounds, dating to 635-650. In the 14th century, splint armor was used as part of transitional armor. In the Valsgärde ship burial, a set of splint armors were found with a Vendel Era Germanic warrior.
