The Kiev Mask Helmet is based on archaeological finds from the 10th century Kievan Rus territories, where Slavic warriors and Varangian mercenaries wore reinforced helmets that protected their whole faces. The unique design of the mask was meant to protect the face in close combat while still letting air and light through.
